the magic city

I realize it’s been awhile since I’ve written anything, but I think it happens to everybody so no apologies. I’m back in Birmingham for the summer. The first couple of days were like some mythical reunion. I drove down the street in awe of the concrete and steel and glass. I loved that driving for 45 minutes or an hour to get somewhere seemed normal, rather than the 10minute max of Waco. Then I got stuck in traffic one afternoon and it took over an hour to go 1.5 miles and my love affair was over.  anyhow, the whole thing is funny. because Birmingham seems so wonderful because it is something new, humans just seem to love changes in scenery (and I realize I might love it more than most). The buildings and hills and green trees were just such a contrast to Waco. But it is also wonderful because it is familiar – it has been over 6 years since I have lived in Birmingham for more than a three week Christmas break, but it is wonderfully comforting to be back in a large city where I know my way around. it’s magic how humans love change and continuity. the magic city.
